The Bexley Seabury Scholarship for First-year Students

The Bexley Seabury Scholar may be named from among the entering first-year Master of Divinity students. Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to pursuing ministry (lay or ordained) within the Anglican tradition.

Application Deadline: March 20

This is a need-based scholarship intended to cover the cost of tuition and fees associated with the pursuit of the Master of Divinity degree. This is a “top up” scholarship which will make up the difference between what your diocese or other bodies have committed to offering you in support and the cost of tuition and fees for the courses leading to an MDiv. The scholarship covers a total of 81 credits, which may be pursued full or part-time. Though preference will be given to those just starting their degree, transfer students may also apply and may be granted a scholarship for their remaining degree requirements. Students must remain in good academic standing to retain the scholarship. 

The fellowship covers the 81 credit hours needed for the MDiv, provided the student maintains good academic standing. Courses may be pursued full or part time.

Deadline: March 20 of the calendar year in which studies are to begin.

  • Applicants for the Bexley Seabury Scholar Scholarship must:

    •  Exhibit a commitment to ministry in the Episcopal Church

    • Have a GPA of B or above in their previous academic work

    Bexley Seabury will give preference to applicants who could not otherwise afford seminary, and who will thrive academically in the kind of contextual program that Bexley Seabury offers. The seminary encourages students from underrepresented communities to apply. 

  • Applications for the Bexley Seabury Scholar Scholarship must include the following:

    1. At least two recommendations on behalf of the applicant, using the Bexley Seabury Scholar Scholarship recommendation form, found here, submitted directly to Bexley Seabury by the recommenders. Recommendations may be made by individuals who have also submitted letters of recommendation for admission to the MDiv degree program. Learn more about the MDiv Program.

    2. A personal essay of approximately 1000 words that directly addresses qualifications to be a Bexley Seabury Scholar Scholarship recipient. Applicants may choose to submit an audio or video recording of the equivalent (7-10 minutes) in place of a written essay. Please describe what you see as the church’s greatest need in your context, and how might the church be called to respond, creatively and faithfully.

    3. A completed FAFSA application (for purposes of income verification);

    4. If you are a postulant or thinking about pursuing a possible call to holy orders in the Episcopal church you must also request to be submitted on your behalf a signed letter (on official letterhead) from your Bishop or the Chair of your Diocesan Commission on Ministry, indicating that they (1) are aware of your application for admission to Bexley Seabury Seminary’s MDiv program and of your plans to study full time here for three years; (2) are aware of your application to receive the Bexley Seabury Scholar Scholarship; and (3) support (or do not oppose) your decision to study at Bexley Seabury Seminary as a Bexley Seabury Scholar.
