In gratitude for the life of Dr. Robert Bottoms, former Interim Dean and President, Seabury-Western
We are saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Robert “Bob” Bottoms on January 27, 2026. While many knew him as a transformative leader and a builder of institutions, especially DePauw University, we remember him as a warm and dedicated servant-leader who stepped into the role of Interim Dean and President at a vital time in our history. Bob’s legacy is woven into the very fabric of Bexley Seabury; his passion for expanding educational access and his unwavering commitment to the Episcopal Church left an indelible mark on our community. As we reflect on his extraordinary life, one filled with wisdom, humor, and a tireless pursuit of justice, our thoughts and prayers are especially with his wife, Gwen, and their children and grandchildren. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.
Bob’s vision for the seminary was shaped by his genuine care for people, a quality reflected in these words from our very own Dr. Thomas Ferguson, who served with him during his tenure.
"Bob Bottoms exemplified a lifetime of service and commitment to education, formation, and diversity. He served as President of Seabury-Western and as Interim President at Bexley Hall at a crucial time in the life of both schools. He helped shepherd the conversations which led to the formation of Bexley Seabury Seminary Federation, and his visionary leadership helped establish an innovative partnership between the DMin in Congregational Development and the Kellogg School of Business at Northwestern. His gentle, kind, yet firm leadership and faithfulness will be greatly missed."
A service to celebrate Bob’s extraordinary life will be held on Saturday, February 14 at 10:30am at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Athens, GA.
